A Note On Personal Theme Music

Heh, I just realized that I made my fan loyalty entry and didn't even mention Star Wars/Star Trek. Funny thing that.

I saw the cover art for the second season of Justice League. Superman and Wonder Woman are on the side. And I, for one, am glad that pointy-eared freak isn't on there. I have an even 20 action adventure cartoons on the top row of my Yaffa blocks, and a Batman is on a whopping EIGHT of them! The four Batman sets, Batman Beyond, Justice League, and the two Super Friends sets. I'm just lucky there's no picture on the spine of the movies (I put those in there too). Superman's also on a bunch of them, but that's all right, Superman's an upstanding guy. Batman creeps me out.

Speaking of Batman, that show made me realize how much I love personal theme songs. I don't mean themes that are variations on the main theme, but theme songs for individual characters. In my opinion, they were better on BTAS than they are now on JL, but that's because I can only pick out Green Lantern and Wonder Woman. Maybe I need to pay closer attention. My favorite episode for personal themes is "The Strange Secret of Bruce Wayne". I'm not sure the order, but when Penguin, Two-Face, and Joker get off the plane and their themes play? That's pretty cool.

Just for the heck of it, here are my top five personal theme musics of all time:

5) Monkey (Dexter's Lab) - Monkey's theme was festive and up-beat. I liked it because it made me want to party.

4) The Penguin (BTAS) - If you set a giant egg to music and made it waddle, that's what this would sound like. Penguin has the kind of music that just goes with his appearance.

3) MacBeth (Gargoyles) - MacBeth's got this cool war-like theme going for him. It has sort of this old timey Scottish feel to it. MacBeth's theme definitely makes him come off as more bad ass.

2) Nightwing (TNBA) - I absolutely LOVE the Nightwing theme! I think when I was in high school, I had the Nightwing theme stuck in my head more than the Batman/Superman Adventures theme. When I got the TNBA DVD on Christmas, I watched that sequence of him riding his bike in "Old Wounds" three times. There's something about that theme that just charges me.

1) Bulk and Skull (Power Rangers) - I have NEVER seen a theme song, whether it was a main title theme or a personal theme or whatever that describes a character as well as the Bulk and Skull theme song. It's comical, it's goofy, it's COMPLETELY Bulk and Skull. In fact, take the theme and have someone who never watched the show listen to it. Ask them the first thing they picture, and it'll be a fat guy and a skinny guy acting like idiots.

Honorable Mention - Joxer The Mighty (Xena). Another comical theme, this one had lyrics!
