That doesn't feel like the case any more. When I was growing up, I never imagined that I'd work in an office. I still don't imagine it, and I have been in an office environment since last May! I may be a temp, but I know a thing or two about the daily commute and the 9-5 life.
I've seen the dark side, though. There's something about working in an office that de-humanizes you. What makes a person not care about their fellow man? Being a temp, we sort of have our close group. We may be outsiders, but we work well together.
Usually, that is. Even among our group, there has been some tension. I've been there long enough (too long if you ask me), and I've seen people come and go. I've seen people get along and I've seen people feel uncomfortable around each other. You spend so much of the day in the same room, what makes one look down on someone or make fun of them? Is it the office environment that does that to you or is it something you bring with you?
I always try to be friendly with everyone, and I generally get along well with people. We have a really good group now, and we always laugh at things. Heck, we played 20 Questions today just to pass the time as we were doing work. It's nice.
Then there are the people above us. I don't know if it's just me resenting authority, but it feels like there's a lack of respect. Nothing entirely obvious, but I get a vibe. And we've had one or two people leave because they either weren't looking for something in this position or didn't feel like they fit in, and I've heard my supervisors joke about them!
I'm probably taking this way more seriously than it actually is, but how can someone just joke about a person who we, as a group, made feel like an outsider? I know what it's like to feel embarassed or that I don't fit in or that people are judging me. It's the worst feeling, it makes you seem like less of a person. I try to be as welcoming as possible, and it really annoys me when people don't.
Argh, sorry, I had to get that off my chest. But believe me when I say office politics are UGLY. People choose sides, they talk behind people's back, they even act inhuman at times. I don't know what it is about working in an office that brings out the worst in people.
So in conclusion, spring sucks. Spring makes me want to fall in love, but that also sucks. Work sucks. I want my DVDs!
